Yeah, it's really confusing and not a great method for uploading avatars for a forum.
Here's how I did it:
Click the 'Edit Avatar' link underneath your username, which will take you to the Gravatar homepage. Then click the 'Get Your Gravatar Today' button, which will take you to a page where you have to type in your email (make sure you use the same one that you registered for this website with). You will recieve an email from Gravatar within a few seconds (if you don't see it in your inbox check your junk mail). Open the email and click the first link. This will take you to a page where you decide what your Gravatar username and email will be. Once you decide, type them in and click 'signup'. It will take you new page where you will see your email address. Underneath it it should say in large letters 'Whoops, looks like you dont have any images yet! Add one by clicking here!'. Click 'Add one by clicking here'. It will take you to a list of options where you are getting your image from (your hard drive, the internet, a webcam attached to your computer, a previously uploaded image).
IF YOU ARE GETTING YOUR IMAGE FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE: Click the first button. Then select the image you want from your computer by clicking the 'browse' button. After selecting your picture and clicking 'next' it will take you to a page where you can crop your photo. Crop your photo to your liking then click 'crop and finish'. It will tell you to select a rating for your avatar. 'G' should be fine. Now it will take you back to the page where you see your email address, but now there is your picture underneath. Click your picture then click 'confirm'. That should do it. :)
IF YOU ARE GETTING YOUR IMAGE FROM THE INTERNET: Click the second button then copy and paste the URL of the image into the box and click 'next'. It will take you to a page where you can crop your photo. Crop your photo to your liking then click 'crop and finish'. It will tell you to select a rating for your avatar. 'G' should be fine. Now it will take you back to the page where you see your email address, but now there is your picture underneath. Click your picture then click 'confirm'. That should do it. :)
Hopefully that helps.
